You would know the secret of death.

But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heath of life?

The owl whose night bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

Good things come from understanding that death isn’t something we have to desperately avoid and life isn’t something we have to frenetically cling to. We are part of everything and everything is part of us. If we are everything what do we have to fear? What are we lacking? Regretting? If we are both the problem and the solution, why worry? If darkness and light illuminate each other, why prefer one to the other? We are much more beautiful, large, limitless, connected, and whole than we think. We are much more incredible, vast, sacred, and miraculous than we can possibly describe in words!

This awareness that lays dormant in so many of us is a revelation anyone can wake up to. When people talk about enlightenment and spiritual awakening, it often sounds like they are describing something unattainable. Something that is so far away from them that it would take years and decades of hard work, dreary self-sacrifice and dull repetition and restriction. The good news is that they too already have everything. They don’t have to go anywhere to find it. We don’t have to find the path of sacrifice and suffering to find home. We don’t have to find the path at all. We are already home.

Eva Dahlgren, a Swedish singer, wrote a song called “Jag År Gud” (I am God, 1991) that illuminates the joy of being one with everything. In this song about the power of knowing who we really are, Dahlgren describes how every little gray stone “carries an eternity” and every little flower possesses a dignity that is godly. This beautiful and inspired song is also about how we, as humans, get disoriented in the moment we forget this interconnectedness. The remedy, as Dahlgren sees it, lies in heart, in the idea of feeling “the width of [one’s] heart, where the whole world exists,” were “every soul is a God.”
